Seventh Grade at FPA

This class is for 7th grade students, based on public school age guidelines. (Students should be 12 as of Sept 1, 2024)  All students are placed in math based on their math ability level. For other classes, they are grouped with their age level. Content areas in history, science, and literature are challenging and interesting even for very gifted students. The 7th grade program meets twice a week on Tues and Thurs from 9:00-3:45. Families have the option to add on our Wed "Study Hall" or our Mon STEM day.  The Wed program includes an intensive Math lab as well as additional help in English and other subject areas.

Grammar/Spelling/Writing

This class will focus on strengthening writing skills. Students will learn the six traits needed for successful writing including content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Students will learn to write a 5 paragraph essay through book reports and other writing assignments. Grammar instruction will also be continued using the Growing with Grammar curriculum.

 

Literature

Our literature selections this year include a wide range of genres from historical fiction to fantasy.  Homework includes daily reading assignments, vocabulary words,  study questions, and projects. This year’s books include Newbery award winner The Graveyard Book,   Dark Water Rising,  and Hatchet.  

 

Math: Students will continue with the Saxon math program as their core curriculum with additional supplemental materials added.  The Saxon math level for 7th grade is the Saxon 8/7, and this is a pre-algebra curriculum. Students can go into a lower or higher  level without affecting their other classes.  

 

Science- Earth Science

Students will learn about the earth as well as the solar system.  We will explore the planets through geological experiments and study  galaxies, planets, stars, nebulas and more.   We will learn about the rock cycle and types of rocks, learn about the layers of the earth,  explore a variety of rock specimens, and enjoy lots of experiments and hands on activities.   

 

 

History: World History- Ancient Civilizations

This class will cover ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and India.  Students will look at art, cultures and religions of these cultures as well as famous individuals.   

 

Art: Exploring the Elements of Design

In this course , children will learn basic principles of design such as line, value, space, etc. The class will have an opportunity to experiment with these principles using a variety of media such as charcoal, paint, and clay. Students will continue to study art history while viewing various artists’ work using these design principles.

 

Music History

In music students will learn about famous composers and periods in music history. We will listen to a variety of compositions and compare works from various composers. 

Spanish

 

Students will explore Spanish language, grammar, vocabulary, and culture. 

 

Band: Optional

Our Band program meets twice weekly, both beginner and advanced band is available.  Class meets after school on Tues and Wed and is an additional fee.
