High School at FPA

The high school program includes 7 class periods- 2 English, Math, Science, History,   Ninth students may also select to join the 8th grade class.  Students should select a math class based on their ability level.   The core high school grade program meets Tues/Thurs from 9:00-3:45 pm with optional add on days M and W.  Families may select individual classes in many cases.

Generally we offer 2 different levels ; a 9th/10th class and an 11th/12th class.  We use an A/B year format to ensure that students receive 4 different classes/topics in their high school years. 

 

English (2 class periods)

The literature covered this year is a selection of American and British Literature.   Our focus this year is on strengthening writing skills.  Students will learn to write a 5 paragraph essay through literary analysis and other writing assignments. Grammar instruction will also be continued.  We will also learn about MLA format in class and practice citing our works in the correct format.  Students will explore creative writing as well as structured writing. They will read a variety of books including both classic titles and newer works. 

 

Math:  Pre Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, or Pre-Calculus may be selected for the math 

 

Science offered varies by year.  We offer Biology or Chemistry for 9th/10th and for the 11/12 we have offered a variety of classes including Anatomy and Physiology, Honors IPC, Environmental Science, Aquatic Science, and more.

Science: Biology with Dissection 

Students will complete an in depth study of Biology including dissections and other labs. Students will have additional assignments weekly including reading to be completed outside of class time.   Students are expected to have assignments completed prior to class.  Teacher will provide quizzes and tests, and grades will be given.  This class is geared towards 9th and 10th graders.

 

History Options: Geography, World History, American History, Government

Geography (2024 9th/10th grade)

In this class, students will be introduced to the principals of geography.  We will explore the people and places in our world, explore cultures and conflicts, and  practice map skills.  

​

American History through Cinema (2024 10-12th grade)

Students will explore United States history through watching historical films and documentaries.  Students will be assigned one film each week to watch at home.  Films include Glory, Lincoln, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, A Force More Powerful, Thirteen Days, Selma, and more.  

​

Art: Exploring the Elements of Design

In this course , children will learn basic principles of design such as line, value, space, etc. The class will have an opportunity to experiment with these principles using a variety of media such as charcoal, paint, and clay. Students will continue to study art history while viewing various artists’ work using these design principles.

 

Music History

 

Band:

Our Band program meets twice weekly, both beginner and advanced band is available.

 

Spanish 

We will have both a beginning as well as an advanced Spanish for our new high school students.
